Hirono Golf Club has hosted numerous professional golf tournaments including the Japan Open, the Japan PGA Championship, and the Asia-Pacific Open. It has also hosted the Canada Cup (now known as the World Cup of Golf) in 1957 and 1973, where legendary golfers like Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Gary Player have competed.
Notably, Hirono Golf Club was the first Japanese golf course to be awarded the honor of hosting the prestigious Walker Cup in 1958, and it has since hosted the tournament twice more in 1978 and 2006. The Walker Cup is a biennial amateur team golf competition between the United States and a team representing Great Britain and Ireland, and is considered one of the most prestigious events in amateur golf.
